Gary Anderson was one of the tips for outright glory in our pre-tournament World Matchplay darts predictions and we’re sticking with him in the final against Mensur Suljovic.
Both players have reached the Blackpool decider for the first time, but we reckon Anderson is in much better form and can prevail 18-13 at 10/1.
The Flying Scotsman travelled to Blackpool in good heart after claiming last month’s US Darts Masters and a couple of recent Players Championship titles.
Anderson came through a tricky opening test against Stephen Bunting, before averaging over 104 in an 11-9 defeat of Raymond van Barneveld.
The two-time world champion then hit a nine-darter in his epic quarter-final clash with Joe Cullen and posted a 106 average when easing past Jeffrey de Zwaan 17-12.
“It was a good performance and it had to be to beat Jeffrey – he has a great attitude and he is a very good dart player,” Anderson told the official PDC website.
“I’m happy with the way I played. The 180s were good, even if my finishing was a bit iffy at times. It’s going well with my new darts and I love them.”
Suljovic to be game but outgunned
Suljovic has been steady throughout the Winter Gardens event, getting the better of Steve Beaton, Ian White and Darren Webster to make the last four.
The Austrian upset the odds to see off last year’s runner-up Peter Wright 17-13 in the semis, but did benefit from the second seed being below par on the doubles and averaged just 90.
“I didn’t think I would win – I was very nervous but I didn’t tell anyone,” admitted Suljovic. “I have already reached my goal, anything else is a bonus but I will give it 100 per cent.”
That attitude gives cause for concern that the 46-year-old may be a touch overawed in the final and we like 17/20 for Anderson to win the match, have the most 180s and the highest checkout.
For those wanting a fun punt and a quick pay-out, 91/100 for the first dart to be a single 20 completes our World Matchplay darts betting tips.
