With the new season fast approaching, we’ve taken an early look at the 2021-22 Stanley Cup odds to see where the ante-post value lies.
Tampa Bay Lightning are chasing a hat-trick of NHL titles but no team has managed that for almost 40 years, so we’re putting our money elsewhere.
But here are three sides tipped to go for glory in our 2021-22 Stanley Cup predictions:
COLORADO AVALANCHE @ 6/1
Under Canadian coach Jared Bednar, the Avs have been knocking on the door for the past few years and now would be a good time to break through, as they are favourites in many pundits’ 2021-22 Stanley Cup betting tips. Colorado went big in free agency 12 months ago and that move looked set to pay off when they led Las Vegas 2-0 in round two of the play-offs, only for four straight defeats to burst their bubble. Some salary cap problems kicked in this summer, but expert juggling of the figures helped the major pieces remain in place and they have now had another season to gel together.
BOSTON BRUINS @ 12/1
The 2019 finalists also went out in the second round of the play-offs last season but have regrouped and seem ready to push for top honours this term. Linus Ullmark deserves the chance to chase silverware after battling in vain between the posts for Buffalo and Jeremy Swayman has scope for improvement when standing in. Taylor Hall is a nice recruit on the left wing, a bulked-up Jack Studnicka could be ready to fulfil his huge potential and a young defense has grown up together. There are still some question marks about Boston but the ceiling is very high if everything comes together.
CAROLINA HURRICANES @ 20/1
The Hurricanes have freshened up their supporting cast over the summer but the main spine of the team is still much the same. Keeping new goaltenders Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta fit will be crucial for the 2006 champions but that is a risk worth taking. Bringing in Tony DeAngelo is another gamble with a big upside and former number three draft pick Jesperi Kotkaniemi looks a great fit with the pressure now off. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour, who captained the side to Stanley Cup success as a player, picked up the Jack Adams Award last term and is hungry to go to the next level.
